The creative industry sector is vital in moving towards a more innovative and competitive Europe. The transnational network “Creative Cities” aims to develop new tools to exploit the unused potentials of creative industries in Central European Cities. The project is financed by the Central Europe Programme and develops transnational clusters to make cities more attractive and to stimulate entrepreneurship. The overall purpose of the project is to establish a transnational network of creative industry clusters in large Central European Cities. Before developing planning instruments, the city partners conducted a SWOT analysis to gain more insight on the sector’s current situation. For this, a joint methodology was created representing the circumstances of each partner city (Leipzig, Genoa, Gdansk, Ljubljana and Pecs). The most important milestone of the project will be a Joint Action Plan (JAP) involving a set of guidelines and recommendations for other cities to use in similar projects. The JAP gathers the results of the network’s Cluster Work Groups and elaborates on the outcomes of the SWOT analysis. The plan is structured around five activities: Networking, Education and Employment, Transfer of Knowledge, Marketing, Infrastructure and Financial Support. The plan aims to answer the following questions: How public policies should be improved; How the cooperation to business of other economic sectors can be strengthened and how to use cooperation potentials; What actions should be taken to improve human skills and how can the support of entrepreneurs and start-ups be optimised; Which joint marketing and dissemination activities should be realised; How to further develop transnational cooperation potentials.

In this interim report, the Northern Economic Futures Commission (NEFC) makes the case for a much clearer focus on the North in economic policymaking. It argues that the longstanding structural challenges facing the North of England are entrenched by systemic factors that inhibit its long-term growth potential, and contends that it is not in the long-term interests of the UK as a whole for this lack of focus to persist.

In the face of current economic challenges, there is a perception that the public no longer cares about climate change, or living more sustainably. Media coverage perpetuates the argument that environmental goals are at odds with what ordinary people want. But is this the truth? This policy insight from the Green Alliance shows that the reality of public opinion on environmental issues is more positive and more complex. Although it has declined to some extent, support for action on climate change remains strong, and economic constraints have made saving energy and cutting waste more normal and important. Most people want their lifestyles to be both green and affordable. It makes it clear that the challenge for government is to devise policies that make this possible.

The aim of this research is to assess the technical, economic, financial and social uncertainties facing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, and to analyse the potential role they could play in the UK power sector between now and 2030. CCS technologies are often highlighted as a crucial component of future low carbon energy systems – in the UK and internationally. However, it is unclear when these technologies will be technically proven at full scale, and whether their costs will be competitive with other low carbon options.
