This is the consultation document for the light touch review of the suite of six guidance documents which underpin the Planning Act 2008. It outlines the context and aims of the consultation as well as the main changes proposed in each of the documents. It also lists the consultation questions for each document. Comments are requested by 6 July 2012.

The cities of Bologna, Funchai, Gdansk, Tallinn and Utrecht have joined forces in an innovative initiative named CIVITAS MIMOSA (Making Innovation in Mobility and Sustainable Actions) to explore the issue of sustainable transport. The project has developed a new search engine to overcome the constraints of most search engines, connecting databases from past, present and future projects in the field of sustainable urban mobility. Searches can be undertaken under the following themes: car-independent life styles; clean fuels and vehicles; collective passenger transport; demand management strategies; mobility management; safety and security; transport telematics; and urban freight logistics. At present the search engine will only find documents, but the aim is to develop to search engine to include consultants and products.

Guidance on insurance and planning in flood risk areas for local planning authorities in England

New guidance for local authorities on planning in flood risk areas has been published by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the National Flood Forum, complementing the Government’s recently published National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). The advice is designed to help local authorities in England when producing local plans and dealing with planning applications in flood risk areas. The guidance sets out five key recommendations which local authorities should follow to help make sustainable planning decisions.

In the light of the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development in June 2012 (Rio+20), this European Sustainable Development Network Quarterly Report (QR) provides a comprehensive overview on precedent international and European policy documents that include objectives on how to achieve sustainable development. As part of the preparation for Rio+20, the development of a global set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) could assist in focusing the broad international sustainable development agenda at a practical level. Thus, in answering the recent development on SDGs, the QR investigates trends on identified SDGs among international and European SD policy documents and their link to two recent Rio+20 proposals for SDG sets.

As part of UNDP’s support to El Salvador, an international conference on strategies for adapting public and private infrastructure to climate change was organized in San Salvador on 30 June 2010. The conference highlighted many of the issues related to increasing the climate resilience of infrastructure.
