In 2011 the Government and its major environmental agencies embarked upon a major change to the way it wanted to see delivery of the Water framework Directive. In particular it is looking to deliver plans and measures at a local level with the active engagement of a wide range of stakeholders and communities. The aim of this conference is to share the learning emerging from the early stages of this process, consider the major objectives of the WFD programme in 2012, in particular how plans will link together, and then a range of issues that will help inform the roll out of the approach from 2013 and beyond, including funding, information provision and integration. The Urban Futures Interactive Tool has been developed to help urban designers analyse the resiliency of their sustainability solutions – the things they are doing today in the name of sustainability, such as incorporating greywater recycling into a housing development or cycle paths across a city. The Tool has been developed using four UK-based scenarios and is thus applicable to sustainability solutions being implemented in the UK. However, the user can add alternative scenarios or additional aspects to the existing scenarios and in this way can tailor the tool to any context. A step-by-step guide to using this Tool (Designing Resilient Cities: a Guide to Good Practice) can be purchased from BRE.
