Tourism in London

This paper published by the Greater London Authority, seeks to present an overview of the tourism economy in the capital and to draw attention to some of the emergent trends evident in data from recent years. Chapter 1 examines who visits London and for what reason. Chapter 2 puts the existing data and evident trends in the context of likely patterns of global economic growth between now and 2050 including an examination of the income elasticity of London’s main inbound tourism markets. Chapter 3 draws attention to the important distinction between those visiting on holiday, those on business and those staying with friends or relatives. Chapter 4 examines the mode of arrival for international visitors. Chapter 5 moves on to the domestic tourism market. Chapter 6 looks at current estimates of the importance of day visitors to London. Chapter 7 draws together some conclusions.

The future of heating: A strategic framework for low carbon heat

The Government has published its Heat Strategy, setting out a vision of how to cut emissions from heating homes, businesses and industry in the decades ahead. The Heat Strategy builds on the Government’s 2011 Carbon Plan which set out plans to meet the fourth carbon budget of a 50% cut in emissions by the mid-2020s.

CORPUS is a European-funded project which aims to enhance the connectivity between research and policy-making in sustainable consumption. The third CORPUS Workshop on sustainable mobility, with a focus on “Scenarios and Possible Sustainable Futures” , brought together more than 55 participants from all over Europe, including researchers, policy-makers and civil society representatives, engaged in one and a half days of intensive discussion on future visions of sustainable mobility and their role in policy planning. The specific aims of the workshop were: to learn from good practices in scenario building as a policy tool; to revise the jointly developed research agenda on sustainable mobility; to brainstorm ideas on how to sustain the CORPUS network activities in the area of sustainable mobility; to provide a networking opportunity for European policy makers and researchers in sustainable mobility; and to further knowledge concerning innovative forms and methods of effective knowledge brokerage. This report forms part of a major Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) research series exploring the key challenges and opportunities for housing in England over the coming decade. The present report focuses on housing in London and specifically explores how we might address the imbalances which exist in both the purchase and rental housing markets in the capital in the immediate future as well as the longer term.
