This paper from the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) discusses some of the key issues related to the monitoring and evaluation of adaptation. It outlines some of the main difficulties and constraints in the development of adaptation indicators. It also proposed a theory of change that could lead to more effective adaptation investments for climate resilient development.

The Environment Agency will be the principal advice and support body, providing the Climate Ready Support Service. The Department of Health asked the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to produce guidance on local measures to promote walking and cycling as forms of travel or recreation. This guidance aims to set out how people can be encouraged to increase the amount they walk or cycle for travel or recreation purposes. This will help meet public health and other goals (for instance, to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions). The recommendations cover: policy and planning; local programmes; and schools, workplaces and healthcare. Details of the consultation on the draft guidance and evidence reviews are available online.

Microeconomic evidence for the benefits of investment in the environment – review

Putting green infrastructure such as parks, gardens and trees at the heart of neighbourhoods can bring significant economic benefits, according to a Natural England study. The findings come from a comprehensive review by Natural England of a number of studies into the economic value of green infrastructure. The report argues that far from being an expensive luxury in difficult economic times, devoting areas of towns and cities to nature can actually bring important savings for the public purse.

The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) is a high-level global forum to promote policies and programs that advance clean energy technology, to share lessons learned and best practices, and to encourage the transition to a global clean energy economy. Initiatives are based on areas of common interest among participating governments and other stakeholders. The United Kingdom hosted this latest event with Ministers from more than 20 participating countries gathering to discuss progress made by the Clean Energy Ministerial’s 11 clean energy initiatives, explore ways to enhance collaboration between participating governments, and develop strategies to drive public-private engagement to support clean energy deployment.
