The All Party Parliamentary Group for High Speed Rail is a cross-party group of MPs who believe that Britain needs a modern high-speed rail network. The group’s objectives are to raise awareness of the need for high-speed rail among parliamentarians and to provide a forum for discussion and debate on high-speed rail. The Group has published the findings of its inquiry, carried out to determine: the current capacity situation on Britain’s railways; the capacity Britain’s railways will require in the future; and the best way of providing capacity and future-proofing Britain’s rail network.

This is the Government’s response to Alan Cook’s independent review which examined whether the Government had the right approach to operating, maintaining and enhancing the Strategic Road Network. The Government is also publishing the terms of reference for the joint DfT and HM Treasury feasibility study which will build on the work undertaken by Alan Cook, and look at innovative options aimed at bringing more private sector involvement into the strategic road network. Taken together this represents a programme for reforming the road network in both the short and the long term.

This event, held at the LSE, brought together some of the UK’s most distinguished architects to present their designs for the Aquatic Centre, the Velodrome and the Basketball Stadium, three of the most inventive and symbolic buildings of the Olympic Park, explaining how they have been conceived to be adapted or dismantled after the Games. The complex process behind this massive regeneration project are described by some of the principal protagonists who commissioned the buildings and public spaces, providing a social, economic and environmental context to the architecture of the Olympic Games. Grow your own way: Taking a localist approach to regeneration

Localis, in partnership with the Local Government Association, has produced a report arguing that a new locally-driven approach to regeneration is needed. The report analyses the lessons from a number of case studies of successful regeneration programmes and concludes that local authorities are best placed to provide the local leadership that is crucial to drive successful regeneration. The report also advocates an expansion of the community budget pilots across the country and the introduction of bolder funding mechanisms to allow councils to coordinate and fund regeneration programmes from the bottom up despite the challenging financial climate.
