The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has published a report which found that local authorities are only just beginning to consider vulnerable communities and involve them in their climate change adaptation plans. T he report urges the Government to help set the agenda to ensure social justice is considered in climate change adaptation through its National Adaptation Programme.

Westfield Stratford City is the first in a new series of product specification videos produced in association with Building. With over 70% of visitors to the Olympic Park passing through Stratford City, Westfield had to reduce their original delivery programme from ten to six years. In this video Westfield’s Design Director, Simon Cochrane, looks at the challenges and demands placed on the project, how the interior design concept was delivered and why Westfield chose to work with partners like SAS International.

An assessment of the effects of conservation areas on value

In 2012 English Heritage commissioned the London School of Economics (LSE) to undertake research into the effects of conservation areas on value. A statistical analysis of more than 1 million property transactions between 1995 and 2010 from the Nationwide building society and data on more than 8,000 English conservation areas found that properties in conservation areas sell for 23% more on average than houses outside conservation areas. Even when location, the kind of properties involved and other factors affecting house prices are adjusted for a premium of around 9% was still found.

Legal frameworks for sustainable energy infrastructure

A new report from the UK Green Building Council has set out to clarify the legal process for creating community-scale heating and energy schemes, such as district heating and heat networks. The aim is to encourage more local authorities to integrate these schemes into new and existing developments. The report is the culmination of a UK Green Building Council Task Group which brought together a cross-section of industry experts, including developers, energy providers, local authorities and other stakeholders, to identify ways to help anyone trying to implement community-scale energy infrastructure projects. It simplifies the complex legal landscape that often forms a barrier to such schemes progressing.

It is a consultation document and has been informed by the over 600 responses the Department received to its scoping document.
