Climate change – is the UK preparing for flooding and water scarcity?

Four times as many households and businesses in England could be at risk of flooding in the next twenty years if further steps are not taken to prepare for climate change, according to a new report prepared by the Adaptation Sub-Committee (ASC) of the Committee on Climate Change. While finding some positive signs of progress, the report proposes increased expenditure on flood defences and more careful planning of new housing in the floodplains.

It is about agreeing on current and future priorities and activity in a systematic way and setting this out in a Destination Management Plan.
Camden Blueprint Project: Testing neighbourhood planning in Bloomsbury and Somers Town

The Camden Blueprint Project has set out to test neighbourhood planning in two inner London neighbourhoods. The intention has been to use methods that mobilise as many people as possible, address issues of access and equality, and highlight the importance of having the capacity to deliver neighbourhood planning through effective community development work and independent technical aid.
National Construction Contracts and Law Survey 2012

From March to April 2012, the NBS ran its first survey about contracts and legal issues within the UK construction industry. It ran the survey to understand, amongst other things: the different contracts and procurement methods being used; at what point in the process contracts are signed; the number and kinds of disputes taking place; and how frequently partnering or collaborative working are used in construction projects.

Created by the Centre for Cities think-tank, this report compares how cities have progressed across measures such as population, employment and wages with the aim of illuminating how some cities have become more successful than others. The study says that skills are the most important factor determining long-term urban success. The report also shows that investment in infrastructure and other drivers of growth have helped some cities with a lower skills base in 1901 buck the trend.

Outcomes from a University of Westminster research project, entitled Constructing post-war Britain: Building workers’ stories, 1950-1970, are now available online. The project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, aims to collect oral history testimonies from construction workers who were employed on five of the highest profile sites and developments of that era. These are: Stevenage New Town; Barbican development, City of London; South Bank arts complex; Sizewell A power station; and the M1 motorway. Downloads of the five case studies and audio files of interviews are available online.

The Global Urbanist is an online magazine reviewing urban affairs and urban development issues in cities throughout the developed and developing world. It was created in 2009 by alumni of urban policy and international development programmes at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Its readers are drawn from the urban policy and international development sectors, and include urban planners, officers in local, national or international government agencies, civil society leaders, researchers and academics. It receives articles from professionals and concerned community members in these fields on any topic affecting the management of cities. Articles are published under one of the following six themes: planning, governance, economy, communities, environment, and international.
