Recognising the intrinsic value of logistics to the UK economy, the Government has recently reviewed the sector and it is putting in place a series of measures that will both encourage growth and remove barriers to future expansion. One of the Government’s main areas of interest is the promotion of rail freight and the development of a network of Strategic Rail Freight Interchanges (SRFI). It is anticipated that this new approach will address the expected increase in freight transport and help meet the demand for a low carbon logistics industry. This note focuses on the elements that apply specifically to rail freight and the future development of SRFIs.
EU Sustainable Urban Mobility Awards

Within the framework of its Sustainable Urban Mobility campaign, the European Commission has launched the EU’s first award to encourage the adoption of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) by local and regional authorities. Under the inaugural theme ‘stakeholder and citizen participation’, local and regional authorities can submit their applications for the award of EUR 10,000. Applications are open until 9 November 2012.

Advice on dealing with squatters in your home

This guidance updates the version published on 21 March 2011 advising home-owners on how to deal with squatters. From 1 September 2012, a person squatting in a residential building is committing a crime. This guidance is jointly produced with the Ministry of Justice and is aimed at informing property owners about the new offence and the procedures for regaining possession of their properties from squatters.
