A joint publication from National Housing Federation and HouseMark offers new thinking on value for money for housing associations. It outlines a comprehensive new approach to value for money that goes beyond the narrow requirements of the regulator to offer the sector an approach that will help boards and senior managers run effective, efficient and tightly focused social businesses. A number of sector chief executives have contributed their ideas and experience.

As part of its consultation process for the Community Empowerment and Renewal Bill, the Scottish Government has launched a new web resource.Entitled ‘Our Great Ideas’, the website is aimed at encouraging community groups from across Scotland to share their regeneration activities as well as views, aspirations and frustrations around community empowerment. The focus is on providing a space for community groups to directly contribute their own content, including project details, stories, videos and photos.

The World Green Building Council is partnering with McGraw-Hill on a new global green survey. The survey will offer key insights on construction activity around the world by examining important trends affecting and transforming the construction industry on a global, regional and national level. The survey aims to explore the benefits of green construction throughout the world, as well as looking at the variation of green practices and standards by region.

Housing Voice is the campaign alliance established in 2011 to champion the need for more affordable homes to buy or rent. Housing Voice launched an Affordable Homes Crisis Inquiry in 2011 and the results have now been published. It is hoped that the report will help raise the profile of affordable housing higher up the political and public policy agenda and that its proposals will be taken seriously by the Coalition Government, political parties, the media and the wider general public.

Design and Sustainability Business Plan 2012/13

The Homes and Communities Agency’s Design and Sustainability Advisory Group was set up in 2009 to help the Agency deliver its statutory objectives around improving design and embedding sustainability in development. The small group, drawn from industry and design professions, provides advice to the HCA Board on how the Agency performs against these objectives. This Business Plan sets key priorities for the Advisory Group in 2012/13, with a particular focus on working with the HCA to develop its role in promoting good practice and providing design support and placemaking advice to partners, as well as developing a longer-term vision for achieving the HCA’s design and sustainability objectives.
Groundwater treatment on the Olympic Park

This article appears in the Proceedings of the ICE: Water Management, Vol.165, Issue 8, September 2012. Following completion of the site investigation, the remediation design and soil remediation phases on the Olympic Park, the focus turned to the remediation of the underlying groundwater contamination. As with the soil, the groundwater aquifers had also been impacted by the downward migration of contamination following historic industrial activity in the area. This contamination required treatment by a number of techniques to protect both the surrounding watercourses that dissect the park and the underlying groundwater aquifers from further impact.
