Yet the benefits that flow from the arts and culture cluster go beyond the economic. Zero carbon strategies for tomorrow’s new homes

The UK Government has set out an ambitious plan for all new homes to be zero carbon from 2016. This guide, published by the Zero Carbon Hub, uses newly built housing schemes to illustrate the approaches that a house builder could take to meet the expected 2016 zero carbon requirements. It provides specification details allowing each scheme to be categorised as a Balanced, Extreme Fabric or Extreme Low Carbon Technology approach.
The reshaping of retail

The total number of shops in the UK will fall by more than 10% by the end of the decade, according to a report commissioned by Hammerson from retail consultant Conlumino. The report finds that pressures on spending, and the continuing rise of multi-channel retail will cause floorspace to shrink by 5.7% to 527m sq ft by 2020. Retail spending, however, is likely to increase in the period to 2022, as the twin influences of smartphones and an ageing population exert themselves over the direction of sales growth.

Cycle City Ambition Grants

On 30 January 2013, the Minister, Norman Baker, announced $42 million of investment in cycling which would comprise of two elements – an urban element and an element for rural areas covered by a national park. The cycle city ambition grants guidance details the scope of the fund, the assessment criteria and the application process. The application form and pro forma templates are both required when submitting a bid for cycle city ambition grant funding.
