The International Conference on Material Handling, Constructions and Logistics (MHCL) is the 20th event of a series that started in 1976. The aim of the Conference is to be a forum to exchange views, opinions and experience on MHCL from technical viewpoints in order to track the current achievements, but also to look at to future developments. The refurbishment of existing housing stock presents a great opportunity for architects. With this context in mind, as well as the launch of the government’s Green Deal initiative, the RIBA’s 7th annual research symposium asked the question: what challenges and problems lie beneath the maxim ‘don’t move, improve’? Encompassing issues including conservation, sustainability and design quality, the symposium explored whether old houses can become modern homes. The event included case studies from both architects and academics, as well as the presentation of an exciting student design charrette showcasing how schools of architecture came together to tackle the challenge of retrofit. Retrofit for the future

Retrofit for the Future catalysed the retrofit of over 100 homes across the UK, with an ambition of achieving an 80% reduction in the in-use CO2 emissions of each property. Coordinated by the Technology Strategy Board, the Retrofit for the Future competition encouraged collaboration between housing associations, designers, contractors and researchers, and has helped to stimulate new business opportunities in the retrofit market. This website hosts the first analysis of monitoring data provided by Retrofit for the Future projects. Here you will find a series of charts showing the performance of the properties, including energy use, CO2 emissions, internal temperatures, air tightness and occupant satisfaction.

This report from the World Green Building Council investigates the business costs and benefits of green building in five vital categories and finishes with an exploration into the both the impacts that a greener built environment can have at a macro scale and how this can be achieved. The study argues that the cost premium on the development of green buildings is not as high as has often been perceived by the industry, that green buildings are capable of commanding higher rents and sale prices than traditionally constructed buildings, and that green buildings improve workplace productivity and health.
