Delivering and funding housing retrofit: a review of community models

Arup has launched a new report which provides best practice and international guidance to central government, local authorities, social housing providers and other organisations who are trying to implement retrofit programmes. The study, supported by the Institute for Sustainability, is the result of a year-long research project that reviewed over twenty case studies of international delivery and funding models for retrofit.

The Landscape Institute has published six recommendations for how to deliver the next generation of green infrastructure (GI) in a new GI position statement.  Despite a groundswell of support in recent years, including increasing policy support in the government’s National Planning Policy Framework and Natural Environment White Paper, the Landscape Institute is calling for this growing interest to be matched with funding and a new approach to the landscape that enables GI to flourish.

The competitiveness of global port cities: The case of Mersin, Turkey

This working paper offers an evaluation of the performance of the port of Mersin, an analysis of the impact of the port on its territory and an assessment of policies and governance in this field. It examines port performance over the last decades and identifies the principal factors that have contributed to it. The effect of the ports on economic and environmental questions is studied and quantified where possible. The value added of the port cluster of Mersin is calculated and its interlinkages with other economic sectors in Turkey delineated. The major policies governing the ports are assessed, along with policies governing transport and economic development, the environment and spatial planning. These include measures instituted by the port authorities, as well as by local, regional and national governments.

Tackling the sustainability and development challenges of the 21st century will undoubtedly require the ‘best available’ scientific advice: to measure progress; to predict impacts; to identify solutions; and to evaluate options and pathways for decision-making. The annual symposium of the STEPS Centre (Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability) considered what is ‘best advice’ – and how might this idea need to be re-thought – amidst the inherent complexities, uncertainties and contestations of knowledge and value that pervade so many of today’s challenges. Many questions persist about how to build and maintain robust, open and accountable processes of expert advice that can operate effectively across disciplines, sectors, social contexts and national boundaries.
