Market failure, inequality and deprivation are real and must be tackled, and government has a vital role to play in order to maximise the productive potential of our poorest neighbourhoods. But regeneration is not just a matter of reviving housing markets, providing transport infrastructure or devolving financial responsibilities. The starting point should be to understand and engage with the people who are most affected by poverty in the places where they live, working with them to create solutions that work in the context of their lives and strengthening the links and assets that are already important to them. This paper argues that we need to see people as the solution, not as the problem.

It has been over three years since the Marine and Coastal Access Act was passed, with cross-party consensus that Marine Conservation Zones were necessary and widespread public support. Despite this, the designation process has been repeatedly delayed and Marine Conservation Zones have become increasingly controversial. A report from the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee argues that the project seems to be in danger of losing sight of its original vision for marine conservation in the UK.  Vol.2 provides additional written evidence to the Committee.

Making slums history: A global challenge for 2020. Rabat, Morocco, 26-29 November 2012

This event provided an opportunity to share best practices on policies and the implementation of slum upgrading, eradication and prevention programmes by local and national the world. The specific objectives of the conference were to: develop specific recommendations and guidelines for slum improvement policies and the development of well-adapted housing alternatives to prevent new slum formation (the Rabat Declaration); devise the strategy required to revise Target 7-D of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and adjust it more closely to the diversity of national conditions and circumstances; share successful experiences, methodologies and evaluation methods with regard to slum reduction; broaden the scope of experience-sharing within the Conference to bring in Least Performing Countries (and African countries in particular), to help them implement effective slum reduction policies; strengthen partnerships between Morocco and other African countries. The Valuing Nature Network unites novel natural science research with economics to bring the natural environment into government and business sector decision making. Indeed it directly supports and demonstrates the policy and business impact of research.
