This third URBAN-NEXUS Dialogue Café provided an opportunity to: share knowledge with other researchers, urban professionals and practitioners from across the public, private and third sectors; identify complex issues shared by European cities in achieving sustainable land-use; relate issues on land-use to other aspects of ‘the sustainable city’; and develop connections and networks with other organisations to explore priorities and potential options for future cooperation and collaboration. UCL’s Institute for Sustainable Resources, in partnership with the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP), hosted this seminar for policy makers construction professionals, product manufacturers and suppliers. As the most significant consumer of the Earth’s natural resources, the construction sector will need to get ‘more from less’ if it is to respond to the increasing pressures of cost, availability and environmental impact. The ASBP believes that this will require a move away from commodities, generic materials to a value added model, which encourages and rewards product innovation and intelligent design, for both resource efficiency, as well as building performance. In this seminar, a panel discussed physical resource limits, options for reduction and reuse and examples of current best practice and how it can be encouraged. Presentations are available online.

This study looks at the evolving nature of risk and vulnerability in urban settings and assesses the operational implications of these trends and challenges for the British Red Cross, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and the wider humanitarian sector. It highlights five ways forward for the British Red Cross and others. While drawing lessons from humanitarian programmes across the globe, the study focuses principally on evidence from five British Red Cross operational contexts: Haiti (Port-au-Prince), Uganda (Kampala and other cities), Djibouti (Djibouti-ville), Mongolia (Ulaanbataar) and Nepal (Kathmandu).

Noise Road-Map: A blueprint for managing noise from aviation sources to 2050

Sustainable Aviation has launched the industry’s first Noise Road-Map, demonstrating how noise from UK aviation will not increase despite a near doubling in flights over the next 40 years. This is achieved through the development and introduction of quieter aircraft alongside the implementation of better operating procedures and improved land-use planning. Going forwards, signatories to Sustainable Aviation will use this Road-Map as a toolkit in refining their own plans to manage noise.
