This issue of the quarterly magazine highlights the role of Cohesion policy in returning growth to Europe. Cohesion policy is the investment arm of the EU budget, aiming to boost growth and competitiveness through capitalising on regional strengths. Minimum standards for embedding disaster resilience

The Department for International Development (DFID) Business Plan for 2012-2015 commits DFID to embed disaster resilience in all DFID Country Offices by 2015. This document sets out the minimum standards a country office should reach. The Department for International Development has also published a series of briefings highlighting recommendations for building resilience in Nepal, Kenya, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The House of Commons Treasury Select Committee has published a report on the 2013 Budget. The Committee argues that the Help to buy scheme, hailed by George Osborne in last month’s Budget as a way to help first-time buyers and prop up house prices, ‘may have a number of unintended consequences’.

Adaptation to climate change in Dhaka

This video highlights research being undertaken by University College London  to understand how the impacts of climate change in Bangladesh are going to affect the urban poor in the city of Dhaka. Secondly, the study assess how plans for adaptation at the local (neighbourhood level) will affect vulnerability. The research looks at impacts from a vulnerability perspective; understanding who and what is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and climate vulnerability as well as what can be done to address these vulnerabilities. The emphasis is on physical environment and the aspects contributing to adaptation in built environment.

This major new report challenges the view that improved international air connectivity will necessarily bring significant benefits to the UK economy. The report by the independent Dutch consultants CE Delft, and commissioned jointly by WWF, RSPB and the Heathrow campaign group HACAN, argues that “claims about the economic benefits of connectivity are not founded on solid evidence.”

The main objectives of this workshop were: to reflect upon the Rio+20 outcomes document and which of its objectives and targets are particularly important to be addressed in the EU; on the basis of this, which topics should be addressed in the forthcoming EU Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS) review and how could a future governance structure for the EU SDS look like; and to identify a potential role and services the ESDN could fulfill for the EU SDS review and in the post-review EU SDS process.
