More than 66 professionals from 16 European countries discussed in Bratislava the trends, barriers and approaches for sustainable mobility in European cities. The experts agreed that it is necessary to focus on clever combinations of technological and infrastructural solutions with measures to stimulate changes on the demand side. In a nutshell, sustainable urban mobility in the future has to opt for clean technologies, smart infrastructures and to favour the change of modal split towards more walking, cycling and public transport. London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Review

In its Post-Games review, the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee urged ministers to ensure lessons were learned and shared. The Committee argues that the event had demonstrated that it was ‘possible for government departments to work together and with other bodies effectively to deliver complex programmes’. Among the factors the committee singled out as contributing to the success were detailed planning, continuity of senior staff and strict project and risk management. Creating specific bodies with clearly defined goals, such as the Olympic Delivery Authority and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games was also good practice.

With women projected to comprise a majority of the world’s urban dwellers and head increasing numbers of households, gender equality in employment, housing, health and education is vital to ensure the prosperity of the cities of the future, according to a new United Nations study. The report, produced by UN-Habitat, examines the gender dimensions of the defining characteristics of a prosperous city: productivity, infrastructure development, quality of life, equity and social inclusion and environmental sustainability. It provides a conceptual framework for understanding the relationship between gender and prosperity and also reviews policies and institutional framework relevant for mainstreaming gender concerns in cities.

This new book provides a framework of up-to-date scientific information on agro-ecosystems both at regional and country specific level. A collaboration between the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF/WECARD), and the CGIAR Research Programme on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), the book provides climate data and analysis on 11 of the 16 countries which make up West Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
