Compendium of Transport Research Funding: A guide to European, international and national programmes

The Compendium offers an overview of transport research programmes and funding sources, currently ongoing in 36 countries in Europe and beyond. Besides the ERA (European Research Area) countries, the Compendium provides information about Canada, China, India, Russia, South Africa and the United States. These countries have all participated in FP7 programmes. Key stakeholders, institutions, programmes and policies related to transport research and innovation are described for each country, providing a detailed guide on the state-of-the-art in the transport arena. This represents a unique source of information for policy makers and research managers.

The Mayor of London submitted his response to the Davies Commission’s discussion paper on Airport Operational Models. It makes the strongest argument yet that the hub operating model is the way of the future and presents compelling analysis of the destinations and route frequencies the UK will benefit from if we develop a single, large hub airport.

The World Health Organisation has published a report to help national policy-makers in Europe to assess the costs of health and adaptation. It provides guidance on assessing the costs of the health impacts of climate change and also the costs and benefits of adaptation to avoid or minimise these impacts.

The recent structural changes introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon exemplify the dynamic and constantly evolving nature of the European Union (EU)’s institutional system. Given the gradual empowerment of EU institutions, this Special Issue focuses on bringing agents and agency into the study of EU politics and influence. The objective is to explore the roles and activities of specific groups of actors inside the institutions and investigate actors’ capacity to influence (policy-making) processes beyond the analysis of outcomes.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has released a guidance publication, titled ‘Increasing Climate Resilience of Urban Water Infrastructure,’ based on a case study from Wuhan City, China. The guidance focuses on answering questions faced by city planners and managers: what changes might be caused by climate change?; how will these affect services and utilities?; and what can we do now to prepare for them? The guidance is divided into two sections, the first focuses on an approach to increasing climate resilience of urban water infrastructure, the second outlines short-term investment opportunities.

The InContext Final Conference & Informed Cities Forum 2013 brought together over 120 participants, from more than 20 countries: researchers, community activists, local government representatives, entrepreneurs and artists. What they all had in common was a belief that better places, stronger communities and resilient societies are within our reach, if we learn to work together in a respectful and trustful way.
