The Better Building Partnership (BBP), a collaboration of seventeen of the leading commercial property owners in the UK, has updated its guidance on the use of green leases for commercial property. This guidance are non-prescriptive, helping owners and occupiers to agree carbon, energy, waste and water reduction strategies which best fit with the circumstances of individual properties. With the help of this Toolkit it is possible for any owner or occupier to positively engage in developing practical ways to effect significant positive change, ultimately accelerating the process of making the UK’s existing commercial properties more sustainable.

Closing the gap between design and as-built performance – New homes – Interim progress report

The Zero Carbon Hub has published an interim report looking at how to close the performance gap in new homes. The report is based on a continuing collaborative industry project led by the hub. It involves 140 industry experts across 90 companies, who are participating in the executive committee, steering group and working groups. The initial report highlights issues that could influence the gap between intended (as-designed) and as-built performance, and some early findings.

The government needs to step in to help ensure good performance of mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) systems in homes, a task group led by Zero Carbon Hub has concluded. The hub’s ventilation and indoor air quality (VIAQ) task group says concerted government-led action is needed to develop and promote good practice and ensure public health and safety, with new research informing future Building Regulation requirements.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have been shaping the global development agenda for over a decade. With the target date of 2015 fast approaching, determining a new development agenda has become an urgent priority for the international community. Following an agreement by Member States at the Rio+20 summit in 2012, a process has been launched to develop a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a successor framework to come into effect after the MDGs expire. The new goals are to address the multiple crises facing humanity through a more inclusive process, aiming for equal treatment of the economic, social and environmental dimensions in the implementation. This issue of Dimensions contributes to the debate on the SDGs and, as always, offers a platform for discussion and opinions.

Green Deal Code of Practice

This code of practice is issued by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change under regulation 10 of the Framework Regulations and sets out requirements for those persons acting as Green Deal Providers, Green Deal Assessors, or Green Deal Installers, or Certification Bodies. It substitutes and revokes the Green Deal code of practice issued on 25th January 2013.
