Climate change mitigation in emerging economies: From potentials to actions

The integration of emerging economies into the climate regime is one of the largest challenges in climate diplomacy. In this context, the project, financed by the German Federal Environment Agency, provides analyses that support the realistic evaluation of the pledges from the most important emerging economies (Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa and South Korea) relative to their “business-as-usual” development, as well as political activities that support mitigation activities in the six countries. The first report, released in April 2013 assessed how ambitious emission reduction pledges of emerging economies are compared to business as usual emissions and the countries’ mitigation potential. The second report, named has now been released. It provides an overview of current activities regarding climate change mitigation in the named countries. It covers the institutional set up, measurement, reporting and verification systems for greenhouse gases and mitigation policies and measures. The analysis also addresses existing barriers to mitigation and considers where the international community could provide support to remove these.
