The Future Trends survey was launched by the RIBA in January 2009 and was designed to monitor the employment and business trends affecting the architectural profession throughout the period of economic downturn. Launched as part of a suite of recession-focused initiatives, the survey is completed monthly by a sample representing a cross-section of members. The survey is focused on areas in which members may face potential difficulties, including workload, staff levels and work in specific sectors. Monthly results are independently analysed in order to identify the employment and business trends affecting the profession and to help to identify implications for the profession and inform further RIBA activities.

The integration of emerging economies into the climate regime is one of the largest challenges in climate diplomacy. In this context, the project, financed by the German Federal Environment Agency, provides analyses that support the realistic evaluation of the pledges from the most important emerging economies (Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa and South Korea) relative to their “business-as-usual” development, as well as political activities that support mitigation activities in the six countries. The first report, released in April 2013 assessed how ambitious emission reduction pledges of emerging economies are compared to business as usual emissions and the countries’ mitigation potential. The second report, named has now been released. It provides an overview of current activities regarding climate change mitigation in the named countries. It covers the institutional set up, measurement, reporting and verification systems for greenhouse gases and mitigation policies and measures. The analysis also addresses existing barriers to mitigation and considers where the international community could provide support to remove these. You can also find further information in the project description.

A new report led by Professor Tim Dixon of the School of Construction Management and Engineering at the University of Reading examines how the UK commercial property sector is responding to the challenges of retrofitting our cities by installing energy, water and waste efficiency measures in existing buildings. Based on nearly 40 interviews with key players in commercial property, the research looks at current and future trends in commercial property retrofitting by examining: Who is involved in retrofit? What is retrofit? Why and how is retrofit carried out? The research suggests that the rate of retrofit in the commercial property sector is low and major changes to policy and practice are needed to increase progress.
