Following on from Montreal, Istanbul, San Francisco, Bangalore, Shenzhen, Curitiba, Dakar, Adelaide and Berkeley, this was the first edition to be held in the European Union. ECOCITY is the cross-disciplinary World Summit on Sustainable Cities supported by the NGO Ecocity Builders. The concept was originally designed to: facilitate exchanges among local, regional and governmental decision-makers, researchers and the civil society; bring together all the different disciplines on sustainable cities; offer equal treatment to all speakers; and enable citizens to play a role. This 10th edition positions the city as a vital area of work to grapple with the global sustainability issues A summary of the event is available online.

The Chartered Institute of Housing has commissioned a series of leading commentators to give them their views in the run-up to the election, and hope the resulting essays will stimulate debate over the critical period we are about to enter. The Institute wants to discuss some of the most important housing issues the next government will have to face and which should be reflected in the parties’ manifestos. The series begins with an assessment from freelance journalist and housing commentator Jules Birch. In an opening pair of essays, he looks first at what the coalition government said it would do in 2010 and what has actually resulted, and in the second speculates on the immediate future and sets the scene for coverage of more detailed topics by subsequent authors. In a third essay, Vidhya Alakeson, deputy chief executive at think tank Resolution Foundation, considers the challenges posed by social, labour market and demographic changes.

Using structures, textures, scents, lighting and colour they will transform the Main Galleries and ask fundamental questions about the nature of architecture. ABTA Travel Trends Report 2014

ABTA, the Travel Association, today released its Travel Trends Report 2014, developed in association with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The report predicts cautious optimism in the holiday market for the year ahead with consumers continuing to holiday and planning to spend more than they did in 2013. It also reveals that value for money will remain a priority for many and that package holidays will perform well again in 2014. As well as market trends, ABTA’s 2014 Travel Trends Report highlights destinations to watch for the coming year.
