An independent property valuation inquiry suggests Home Reports in England and Wales could prove beneficial to the property market and consumers. The report follows a public consultation into the operation of the valuation market in July 2013, commissioned by Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

The Sustainable Development Research Network (SDRN) Annual Conference was well attended by representatives from both the research and policy fields, and featured presentations on themes such as natural capital, economic growth, policy-making and engaging the public, evidence, tools and policy evaluation, and renewable energy. The conference generated some interesting discussion and debate, including commentary via the conference twitter hashtag #SD2020 and a number of blog postings. Presentations from the conference are now available on the SDRN website, and can be accessed by following the pdf hyperlinks in the online agenda which is available here. Videos of many of the presentations will also be made available on the SDRN website in due course.

The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management has produced an in-depth independent review of the likely viability, scale and timing of shale gas exploitation in the UK. It also considers if an industry of any significant scale were to develop, what the implications of hydraulic fracturing of shale would be for water resources, water treatment and the water environment, and the regulatory requirements needed to mitigate the industry’s impact on the environment.

The Centre for Public Scrutiny and the Local Government Association have produced a guide to help councils think about the key challenges when considering a change in governance. This guide sets out a ‘thinking toolkit’ of the types of issues that councils, both members and officers, should think when considering governance change. It does not aim to set out the legal and procedural steps which you will need to undertake to do it (which are for the most part set out in legislation), but it will provide you with the tools to think about the challenge.

In mid-March 2014, VistBritain is to launch the GREAT China Welcome to show the world that the UK is ‘China-ready’. It will also help signpost Chinese visitors and travel intermediaries towards appropriate hotels, shops, tours and attractions. Part of this initiative will involve publication of a toolkit containing insights, statistics, guidance and case studies, the web pages will also advise on marketing to and within China, and common do’s and don’ts. Resources already available include statistics on the Chinese market.
