Finland’s energy efficiency boom good for the climate, but trouble for cities

The author of this blog argues that while green buildings are increasing in Finland, their developers seem to be unable to integrate concepts in environmental sustainability and urban livability. To illustrate his concerns, the author  looked up some landmark initiatives for energy-efficient construction in the greater Helsinki area and photographed them.

The report covers the main trends in outbound travel demand for the first eight months of 2013 together with estimates for the full year and also contains initial forecasts for 2014. In addition, it focuses on various topics and market segments, including the role of technology and social media, the growing youth travel market, trends in the hospitality sector and the potential of Africa.2014. It predicts that travel from the advanced economies will grow somewhat more strongly than in the previous year while the travel boom from the developing countries could slacken to some degree.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has published a report which covers the experience of the three-day “Height and Heritage” conference, held in London on 11-13 June 2013, including panels, presentations, social networking events and technical tours. The report is prefaced by relevant contextual data and reportage on the state of skyscrapers in Europe. Included in the volume are two DVDs, containing copies of all presentation materials, as well as video highlights of presentations, social networking events and technical tours. Sustainable energy for whom? Governing pro-poor, low carbon pathways to development: Lessons from solar PV in Kenya

This paper analyses the evolution of the Kenyan photovoltaics (PV) market. Considered by many to be an exemplar of private sector led development, the Kenyan PV market has witnessed the adoption of more than 300,000 solar home systems and over 100,000 solar portable lights. The notion of an entrepreneurially driven unsubsidised solar market has proved to be a powerful narrative amongst development actors who, paradoxically, have provided millions of dollars of funding to encourage the market’s development. This analysis gives important clues for designing climate and development policies, with implications for the governance of energy access pathways that are inclusive of poor and marginalised groups in low income countries.
