The roundtable provided an opportunity for the TCPA to engage its members and practitioners working in and around Greater London and hear their views on revisions to this important strategic planning document, and help inform TCPA’s response and involvement in the process.  The roundtable also introduced and highlighted the link to the Mayor’s Draft Housing Strategy and the funding prospectus which invites bids to increase the supply of much needed new homes in London. The report proposes an economic way to address challenges of population growth and climate change in cities by working with nature and through high quality landscape design. Early public engagement is vital to the acceptance of new energy technologies, according to a new report by the Energy Generation and Supply Knowledge Transfer Network. The report gives an overview of current research on public perception and engagement with energy technologies, and how this may affect the energy industry. Case studies on smart meters, wind farms, carbon capture and storage, whole energy systems and transmission power lines are used to highlight examples of public engagement and show where a lack of public engagement has been detrimental to emerging energy markets.

Climate UK (in partnership with the Environment Agency’s Climate Ready service) has launched a new suite of adaptation to climate change training materials aimed at local authority officers, elected members and communities involved in the Town and Country Planning process. The new resources cover six principal topics: Statutory drivers for adaptation; Making the business case for adaptation; Green Infrastructure as an adaptation response; How developments and buildings can be adapted; Neighbourhood planning; Achieving resilience through planning policy. The resources comprise PowerPoint Presentation slide packs with detailed speaker’s notes that can be downloaded and used to provide local presentations and training in your organisation or community.

London’s transport network: Adaptation and evolution

In Spring 2013, Future of London began looking at transport planning in London, and at how it can adapt to changes in demographics and urban form, and influence sustainable travel choices. In partnership with Transport for London, Future for London ran a three-part seminar series ‘London’s Transport Network: Adaptation and evolution’, that examined adapting to changing demographics, challenging travel behaviours and shaping the road network. This anthology builds on the seminars, with new contributions from speakers and other engaged professionals.

Planning for growth: The role of Local Enterprise Partnerships in England

This report presents an initial assessment, by researchers on behalf of the Royal Town Planning Institute, of a sample of Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) strategic plans which were submitted to the government. The report concluded that LEPs clearly have an important strategic role in supporting investment confidence and championing economic growth, especially through their spatial priorities, support programmes and other initiatives, but their role in the planning system and softer forms of planning remains unclear as they lack clearly defined planning roles. This is further complicated by a situation where the precise role of LEPs is subject to local discretion.
