The Climate Local initiative is the Local Government Association’s programme to inspire and inform climate change action (mitigation and adaptation) by local authorities. The first annual report from Climate Local has been published and includes examples of action from England and Wales.

The Global Climate Risk Index 2014 analyses to what extent countries have been affected by the impacts of weather-related loss events (storms, floods, heat waves etc.). The most recent data available, from 2012 and 1993-2012, were taken into account.
Transport resilience review

The transport resilience review is an independent study of all modes of transport and their ability to function in a wide range of extreme weather events. This review was commissioned by the Secretary of State for Transport in response to the extreme weather experienced during the winter of 2013 and 2014. The report: sets out the context in which it was conducted; gives an overview of the weather events of 2013 and 2014; and provides commentary on the expected severity and frequency of such events in the future.
Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Master Plan

Urban planners from the County Government of Nairobi and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have produced a new Master plan for Nairobi. Key among the challenges identified are uncontrolled urban development, insufficient infrastructure, transport problems and high demand for mid-low income housing. Inadequate coordination between relevant organizations was also identified on the institutional angle. The plan proposes an inclusive urban economy, effective and efficient transport systems, a healthy, thriving & green city, and pedestrian-friendly urban spaces for the Central Business District (CBD).
South-South cooperation: FUCVAM, Uruguay

This report presents the outcomes of our 2013 peer exchange to Uruguay to learn more about the World Habitat Award winning project, ‘South-South Cooperation: international transfer of the Uruguayan Federation of Mutual Aid Housing Cooperatives (FUCVAM) model of mutual aid housing cooperatives’ and to look at how their approach has successfully transferred to other countries. The impact of the project has been significant, directly and indirectly enabling hundreds of thousands of people across Latin America to have access to decent housing as well as other opportunities for income generation and social development.

This report highlights the discussions and outcomes from a conference and study visit held in Barcelona, Spain in February 2014 as part of the Power House nearly Zero Energy Challenge. The report concludes with some recommendations for social housing providers in warm/Mediterranean climates in order for them to take advantage of the finance opportunities in energy efficiency offered by the EU and other schemes available in their countries.

Technical consultation on planning

This consultation puts forward a range of proposals to further improve the planning system and build upon the improvements the government has already made. Proposals cover: neighbourhood planning; reducing planning regulations to promote housing, high streets and growth; improving the use of planning conditions; improving the planning application process; Environmental Impact Assessment thresholds; and improving the national infrastructure planning regime. Comments are requested by 26 September 2014.
