Thirty golden years of the Welfare State (1945-1975) and 30 years of socio-political objectives and policies expressed in the built form, principally housing, are covered in this new book. This review describes the book as the first study to look so closely at these and the extent of the power and influence wielded by architects in this process. The study covers Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and some former colonial territories in the form of 15 essays, each from a scholar in architecture and planning, edited by three of these authors.

The current issue of this magazine, aptly named Divercities, aims at identifying how European cities are meeting the interlinked challenges of diversity and competitiveness. In the following pages, the word will be given to a series of scholars, practitioners and policy makers, all active in different forms at the local level. Their contributions will, on the one hand, analyse the reasons of the “urban factor”, i.e. the connection between diversity, closeness and innovation so typical of urban environments; and on the other, present some innovative approach and practices of diversity management in cities, which have proven particularly successful in favouring local development.

The challenges of traffic congestion, civic engagement and shrinking public spaces are key themes for cities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region; these same challenges cut across West Africa’s cities, too. A conference, “Towards a Roadmap for Sustainable Cities in the MENA Region”, was held in Beirut, Lebanon on 4-5 November 2014, to debate these issues and share experiences. This blog contains videos from this event.
