How do we reduce the impact of extreme weather today while preparing ourselves for future changes? What can we do to build our resilience? The Royal Society has issued a report which investigates these, and other, key questions to help inform important decisions about adaptation and risk reduction that are being made at global, national and local levels.

Resilient Cities, The Annual Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation, is the global platform for urban resilience and climate change adaptation, hosted every year in Bonn. The webinar series is held on a fortnightly basis from October to December each year, and continues the discussions initiated between experts and practitioners in urban adaptation and resilience at the Resilient Cities congress. Webinar speakers explore themes shared at the most recent Resilient Cities congress, as well as cutting-edge topics that define future congresses. Two webinars from the 2014 series are now available online: Communicating resilience and using ICTs for climate change adaptation (6 November 2014), and Integrated climate action: Linking adaptation and mitigation (19 November 2014).

On 2 October 2014, the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) and WorldGBC held a workshop in London to introduce UK green building experts to the European Commission’s ‘Communication on resource efficiency opportunities in the building sector’ and to examine its proposal for an ‘EU framework’ for sustainable building assessment. This workshop report presents a summary overview of the discussions; it is not presented as a formal position of any sort but rather aims to help inform discussions around this topic in the UK and other European countries.
OPTICITIES (Optimise Citizen Mobility and Freight Management in Urban Environments)

The three-year OPTICITIES project is helping European cities to optimise all modes of transport, for passengers and freight, by developing innovative Intelligent Transport Systems that can share data. These systems will help cities consolidate local transport data, and make this available to third parties, while ensuring secure contractual arrangements, an open market to avoid a monopoly, and adherence to public policies on critical data. The project is also developing standards for recording and sharing multimodal mobility data, so that cities can integrate data from all transport modes, locations and timescales.

Eurocities has issued a new series of six good practice case studies shows how cities are adapting to the challenges of growth and socio-demographic change. The series demonstrates how cities are achieving sustainable development by focusing on inward development with densification, energy efficiency and socially-balanced solutions. The examples featured come from the cities of Dresden, Munich, Stockholm, Utrecht, Vienna and Zurich. Each example offers guidance and inspiration for other cities to improve dialogue and participation into planning and development.
Greening the skyline: The challenges and opportunities of tower block retrofit

This report from the Green Alliance aims to identify the conditions for planning successful tower block retrofits. The report, based on interviews and workshops with a range of experienced stakeholders, concludes that despite the current funding context, local authorities and housing associations can achieve significant improvements.
TRANSfer: Towards climate-friendly transport technologies and measures

The TRANSfer project is run by GIZ and funded by the International Climate Initiative of the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). Its objective is to support developing countries to develop and implement climate change mitigation strategies in the transport sector as „Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions“ (NAMAs).

The Local Government Association (LGA) argues that English councils can learn a lot from international experience and innovation on meeting today’s housing challenges. Following a request from the LGA’s People and Places Board a collection of international housing examples from Europe and across the world has been compiled. Housing is a broad field so the research focused on five main themes to reflect the issues facing councils and the lobbying work of the LGA. The five themes are: raising finance to invest in affordable housing; land for building; building quickly; quality of building and quality of life; and making the best use of existing buildings.
