The aim of this meeting was to explore and understand the implications of fracking on water, emissions, and the wider environment. It  looked at the adequacy of the evidence base to help inform how regulation and mitigation measures might work in practice over the life cycle of production. Presentations are available online.

Co-organised by the Bridging the Gap (BtG) and the Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT), the Transport Day is designed to bring together experts and Parties to facilitate discussions on how land transport can play a more visible role in a post-2015 era. Four streams of break-out sessions are: Mitigation Potential of Transport Sector; Policymaking on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport in the Developing World; Ensuring Effective Transport NAMAs; Integrating Adaptation in Transport Policies, and Financing of Sustainable Low Carbon Transport. The first round of calls under the Smart, Green and Integrated Transport challenge of the new Horizon 2020 Framework Programme will be published at the end of the year. To support the preparation of proposals, the Transport Directorate of the European Commission’s Research and Innovation Directorate-General is organising an Information Day on 18 December 2013from 9 AM till 6 PM in the Charlemagne building, rue de la Loi 170, Brussels. The aim of the day is to inform potential participants in the first round of calls under the Smart, Green and Integrated Transport Challenge of the new Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and to offer some unique opportunities for networking. The roundtable has been convened to examine the key factors that drive the costs of high-speed rail investment and review the economic benefits delivered by high-speed rail services on the basis of papers that review experience in a range of countries that have developed large high-speed rail networks. Participants with expertise on the economics of smaller scale high-speed rail systems will also be invited to the discussions. The Roundtable will be held in New Delhi in order to contribute to deliberations on the potential for investment in high-speed rail in India. Presentations are available online.

The Women’s Major Group, which aims to assure effective public participation of women’s non-governmental groups in the UN policy processes on sustainable development, has issued a series of  briefing papers from for the 7th session of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals, being held on 6-10 January 2014. These papers include analysis and key recommendations by Women’s Major Group members on the specific issues being covered in this session. These include: Sustainable cities and human settlements and sustainable transport; Sustainable consumption and production, including chemicals and waste; and Climate change and disaster risk reduction.
