EU ministers and MEPs have signed into law the seventh environment action programme, setting out the bloc’s long-term policy direction for the environment and climate. The programme aims to push the EU in the direction of so-called ‘green growth’, economic development that places as little burden on the environment as possible. It sets out nine policy objectives for 2020, including protecting nature and strengthening ecological resilience, boosting resource-efficient, low-carbon economic growth and addressing environment-related threats to health.

The UK’s tourism industry is set to grow at a faster pace than crucial sectors such as retail, construction and manufacturing, according to a report commissioned by Visit Britain. The Deloitte study reports that the tourism sector will grow by 3.8 per cent a year from now until 2025. It adds that tourism is responsible for one in three new UK jobs created from 2010 to 2012.

Climate change, disasters, and development post-2015

The year 2015 will be pivotal for climate change, disasters, and development. In all three areas, new international frameworks are due to be agreed to guide policy and action. These include the framework and targets to take forward the current Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the second phase of the Hyogo Framework for Action to make the world safer from natural hazards, and a new comprehensive UNFCCC agreement on international climate change action. While these develop in parallel, it is crucial that the three frameworks are linked up such that poverty and social justice concerns are reflected in climate change and disasters frameworks, and tackling climate change and natural hazards is integrated into development targets, policy and planning. This collection of articles from Institute of Development Studies Bulletins from the past few decades provides insights for the development of these international policy frameworks.

Communitas Coalition for Sustainable Cities and Regions in the new UN Development Agenda

Communitas, a coalition generating technical expertise on urban sustainability, has mobilised work groups coalescing around the emerging Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In partnership with ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability), the Network of Regional Governments for Sustainable Development (nrg4SD), UN Habitat, the Tellus Institute and the Ford Foundation, these six work groups are charged with the task of providing ambitious targets for Member States to consider in their negotiations next year:

1.Integrated urban design and planning for inclusive public space, and city-region connectivity and efficiency

2.Participatory democracy, poverty and inequalities reduction

3.Growth, prosperity and jobs for all within planetary boundaries, with a focus on youth and women

4.Universal access to affordable and quality social services and public utilities, including housing, water and sanitation, transport and energy

5.Linkages with rural development, including food security and resources provision

6.Resilience through risk prevention and management, and environmental sustainability
