The UNWTO Sustainable Tourism – Eliminating Poverty Initiative (ST-EP) was born in 2002 at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.to promote poverty alleviation through the provision of assistance to sustainable development projects. The initiative focuses on activities that specifically alleviate poverty, deliver development and create jobs for people living on less than a dollar a day. The initiative has been strongly supported by several countries and particularly by the Republic of Korea, host to the ST-EP Foundation. The process leading to the creation of the ST-EP International Organization was presented during the World Travel Market in London in November 2013 and discussed with the over 35 countries which have so far expressed their interest in joining as founding members and hosting regional offices for the new organization.

The Natural Environment White Paper, The natural choice: securing the value of nature, published in 2011, recognised that a healthy natural environment is the foundation of sustained economic growth, prospering communities and personal wellbeing. It sets out how the value of nature can be mainstreamed across our society by facilitating local action; strengthening the connections between people and nature; creating a green economy and showing leadership in the EU and internationally. It set out 92 specific commitments for action. Since its publication in 2011 Defra has published periodic implementation update newsletters, highlighting significant progress since the last update. This document summarises this information and sets it out in one place. It lists all 92 commitments and sets out the status of each commitment and where further information can be found.
Future Cities Catapult

This a global centre of excellence on urban innovation. A place where cities, businesses and universities come together to develop solutions to the future needs of our cities. This is one of seven ‘Catapults’ launched by the UK’s Technology Strategy Board. The aim for each of them is to become a world-leading innovation centre in its own specialist area. These include transport and offshore renewable energy.

The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee has criticised the Department for Communities and Local Government for its decision to remove local authorities’ discretion to set high standards on energy and water saving, using the Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH), in favour of a lowest-common-denominator national standard.
Strong Foundations: Building better dialogue between tenants and landlords

This is the final report of a Local Government Information Unit project, supported by the Mears Group, which looked at how social landlords are engaging with their tenants on the ground. The project surveyed and interviewed registered social landlords, ALMOs and retained stock authorities. The findings are presented in the report and drawing on this research the report makes four broad practical recommendations that social landlords should consider in shaping more proactive conversations with their tenants.

Transitioning Towards Urban Resilience and Sustainability (TURAS) is a European-wide research and development programme. The “TURAS” project aims to bring together urban communities, researchers, local authorities and small and medium sized enterprises to research, develop, demonstrate and disseminate transition strategies and scenarios to enable European cities and their rural interfaces to build vitally-needed resilience in the face of significant sustainability challenges. This report represents a dissemination tool from Work Package 2 (WP2) of TURAS, Greening Public and Private Urban Infrastructure. The aim of WP2 is to develop new visions, feasibility strategies, spatial scenarios and guidance tools to enhance the biodiversity and ecosystem service benefits of urban green infrastructure. This report represents an overview of the green roof design research carried out as part of TURAS to investigate the effect on ecosystem service provision of designing green roofs for regional biodiversity.
