This report provides a starting point to smart architecture and planning, but there is further work to be done to roll this approach out. Three recommendations are made for the UK Government to take place making into the digital age, and to extend the economic, social and environmental benefits of big data to the spatial disciplines of planning and design. This paper identifies four main approaches to working with data for architects, urban designers and planners: using data to help designers meet user needs; experimentation and modelling using data; analysing data to improve local and national policy making and implementation; and using data to improve transparency to speed up development processes.

This page provides links to Home Energy Conservation Act 1995 (HECA) reports from 296 English local authorities (where links have been provided) setting out the energy conservation measures that the authority considers practicable, cost-effective and likely to result in significant improvement in the energy efficiency of residential accommodation in its area. An independent analysis of all the reports received up to 9 July 2013 was carried out by consultants on behalf of DECC. Details of these reports are captured in the attached database. The database can be used, for example, to see an outline of local authorities’s plans for Green Deal, ECO and fuel poverty activity, local targets such as CO2 reduction, information on housing stock data, activity planned on FITs/RHI, details on planned area-based approaches, an outline of partners and details of co-funding where appropriate. The database may therefore be particularly useful for prospective partners to identify any opportunities to work with particular local authorities.

Evidence suggests that recent governments have been less effective than their predecessors in tackling the underlying problems in the housing market. The Social Market Foundation was commissioned by the National Housing Federation for their Hothouse 2033 project to analyse the last hundred years of housing supply policy. This research assesses why this might be the case, seeking to answer two questions: To what extent have successive governments since 1918 succeeded in addressing housing supply challenges? What factors explain whether governments have pursued and achieved these objectives? The report also looks at how this might be changed.

This report from the Policy Exchange examines the barriers to home ownership, including the pros and cons of introducing new land and property taxes. The report argues that the best way to bring down the cost of home ownership and tackle market volatility is to scrap increases in property taxes, urging policymakers instead to focus on building 1.5 million new homes by 2020.

This Policy Brochure aims at sharing important information about the critical role research plays in policy making and planning in the air transport sector. It is part of the series of Policy Brochures that TRIP issues on the major transport policy priorities set by the EU.
