Building pathology provides a systematic scientific approach to discovering what has gone wrong in a failed building. The CIB Building Pathology Commission is basically concerned with learning from past and current building pathologies and encouraging the systematic application of that knowledge to the design, construction and management of buildings. This report aims to be a concise document that binds a set of in-depth articles. A short introduction is provided in Chapter 1 to present the CIB W086 – Building Pathology Commission and to summarise its recent activities. Chapter 2 deals with building pathology and costs, while Chapter 3 presents the research methodology. Chapter 4 describes the information dissemination, and Chapter 5 is devoted to special case studies. Chapter 6 and 7 provide, respectively, the most important conclusions and the lists of reference documents.

CIB CommissionTG66, Energy and the Built Environment, has published its final report, providing a structured overview and synthesis of the information gathered throughout the project. The outcome of this task group clearly highlights that the energy challenges in buildings are an issue of concern in all countries involved in this study, but that the roadmaps and actions in the different continents vary widely. The study concludes that further international collaboration in the context of CIB or in other networks is therefore needed.

The EUROCITIES charter identifies the duties and responsibilities of European cities as policy makers, providers of services, employers and buyers of goods and services to provide equal opportunities for all residents, to integrate migrants, and to embrace the diversity of their populations. Since its introduction in 2010, almost 30 cities have signed it. This report is based on the input of 22 cities. It finds that migrant integration is being redefined, with policies taking a broader approach to social inclusion, equality and participation. It offers a snapshot into the reality of local integration policies and practices, demonstrating some concrete examples of what cities are doing to include migrants through their everyday policies.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) partnered to analyse current practices in the design and implementation of building energy codes. The aim is to consolidate existing efforts and to encourage more attention to the role of the built environment in a low-carbon and climate-resilient world, and to share lessons learned between IEA member countries and non-IEA countries. The objective is to spread best practices, limit pressures on global energy supply, improve energy security, and contribute to environmental sustainability. The webinar presentation is also available.

Passivhaus principles are just as good at reducing energy demand in tropical climates as they are in central European ones, as the focus shifts to cooling and dehumidification rather than heating. That is the key conclusion of a new study by Germany’s Passivhaus Institut. Analysing the challenges of heat, torrential rains and high humidity, the study looks at dynamic simulations set in three cities: Mumbai, Singapore and Salvador da Bahia in Brazil. It shows that the essentials for Passivhaus buildings in tropical climates are: a very airtight building envelope; 10-15 cm of insulation; solar control glazing; fixed external shades for the windows; and ventilation with both heat and energy recovery.
