While national governments struggle to establish an agreed global climate deal, many of the world’s largest cities have been taking action to combat the effects of a changing climate. As a result, these cities are cutting their carbon footprint, reporting annual energy savings, and their residents are benefiting from healthier living and better business environments. These are just some of the findings from a recent report published by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). The report analysed data from members of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group in 110 cities around the world, including Tokyo, New York, and London.

The economic impact of the UK heritage tourism economy

The Heritage Lottery Fund has published a follow-up to its 2010 Investing in Success study, showing that heritage-based tourism has actually grown despite general economic downturn.  According to the revised report produced by Oxford Economics, heritage-based tourism is now worth £26.4billion to the UK economy annually, a rise of £5.8billion compared with data from 2010. The report also indicates that heritage is a growing concern among domestic tourists, over a quarter of all UK holiday activities undertaken by UK residents now involve heritage.

The Government’s intention to designate councils under Clause 1 of the Growth & Infrastructure Act makes it clear that they see timely determination of major planning applications as an indicator of a good service. However, councils operate in complex environments and such a narrow definition of “performance” is risky. The Planning Advisory Service has spoken to several councils about how they locally define performance and their recent steps to improve their planning services. This case study looks at the variety of work being carried out in Aylesbury Vale, Lincoln, Croydon and Camden councils.
