The Technology Strategy Board has launched ten new software design tools for sustainable buildings. These tools have been developed with funding from the Technology Strategy Board and are beginning to emerge onto the market covering activities from life cycle analysis and operational carbon reporting, to embodied carbon reporting and early carbon calculations. Information on the tools and presentations from the launch conference are available online.

A new English Heritage report claims historic town centre buildings could be crucial for resurrecting high streets.  This report is the product of research commissioned by English Heritage, in partnership with the Historic Towns Forum, to better understand what has changed in recent years. It looks in detail at the current policy and retail context and what they might mean for historic town centres and high streets. The report describes how those that have emphasised local heritage have succeeded in driving footfall and attracting retailers. It emphasises the need for councils to focus on town planning, architectural excellence and long-term investment.

The Compendium offers an overview of transport research programmes and funding sources, currently ongoing in 36 countries in Europe and beyond. Besides the ERA (European Research Area) countries, the Compendium provides information about Canada, China, India, Russia, South Africa and the United States. These countries have all participated in FP7 programmes. Key stakeholders, institutions, programmes and policies related to transport research and innovation are described for each country, providing a detailed guide on the state-of-the-art in the transport arena. This represents a unique source of information for policy makers and research managers.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has released a guidance publication, titled ‘Increasing Climate Resilience of Urban Water Infrastructure,’ based on a case study from Wuhan City, China. The guidance focuses on answering questions faced by city planners and managers: what changes might be caused by climate change?; how will these affect services and utilities?; and what can we do now to prepare for them?  The guidance is divided into two sections, the first focuses on an approach to increasing climate resilience of urban water infrastructure, the second outlines short-term investment opportunities.
