This research, published by the Health and Safety Executive, has looked to identify factors which have contributed to the London 2012 Olympic Park being delivered on time, on budget and with an exemplary health and safety record. Where other research has captured ‘how’ things were done, this research has explored ‘why’ and focused on the underpinning human and organisational interactions.

The Planners Network UK (PNUK) is a group of professionals, academics and others who believe that there is a need for a new long term rethink of the planning and development system in the UK. They argue that it is not just that the current system fails to deliver the housing and sustainable development that is needed, but that the system is unfair and unjust. They believe that successive governments have failed to grasp the vital need to look at land, planning and the property market as one set of overlapping issues that must be radically reformed together. The group has published a manifesto for planning and reform as a basis for discussion.
Climate mitigation and adaptation in Africa: Evidence from patent data

This paper presents comparative data on innovation in selected climate change mitigation and adaptation technologies in the context of Africa. Such analysis informs policy aimed at encouraging international technology transfer and development of domestic innovation capacities. The report presents detailed analysis of the role of Africa in development of these technologies (invention), and then moves on to examine Africa as a technology market (as reflected in patenting). In addition, the authors briefly touch upon the question of cross-border technology development (co-invention) in Africa.

National Infrastructure Plan: update 2012

The National Infrastructure Plan 2011 set out a new approach to meeting the infrastructure needs of the UK economy. The National Infrastructure Plan has three elements: effective planning for the medium term across all sectors; mobilising financing and funding for infrastructure investment; and the Government taking an active role in ensuring the infrastructure in the plan is delivered. This update sets out the progress that has been made in delivering on this strategy.

In 2011, the Government initiated a fundamental reassessment of the Public Finance Initiative (PFI). Concluding that the review presented a compelling case for reform, the government has published a document which presents the conclusions of the review of PFI and sets out the Government’s new approach, PF2, for involving private finance in the delivery of public infrastructure and services. The government has also published guidance, Standardisation of PF2 contracts, setting out the approach to be taken to structuring PF2 contracts.

This EU-funded project started on 1 January 2012 and will last for three years. It has set up 11 pilot sites in 11 cities in 8 countries with the aim of saving energy in Europe’s public buildings using information and communication technology.
