A joint report from Better Building Partnership (BBP) and Jones Lang LaSalle highlights the importance of measuring and achieving reductions in actual energy consumption. Using data gathered from over 200 buildings over the past four years, the study measured the actual energy performance of BBP members’ managed properties in London with surprising results. The report considers whether Energy Performance Certificates alone are sufficient to deliver the Government’s targets to ‘de-carbonise’ the UK’s built environment, and how successful the property industry is in tackling the issue of reducing actual energy consumption. It also contains recommendations and guidance for both owners and occupiers.

This 48-hour virtual design collaboration, held on 27-29 November 2012. New technology is revolutionising the way buildings are designed and how the public can be engaged in the process. By using the power of collaborative working in the cloud and international developments in interoperability, Build Qatar Live shows the power of these new paradigms for architecture, engineering, planning and construction. Through cloud-based collaboration the event was open to worldwide participation. A specially chosen and internationally known site in Qatar was announced, along with a brief for a significant multi-use development. All the key information was published in interoperable formats, and teams were free to exploit any interoperable technology and to add updates to a public collaboration-site The efforts of the BIM Academy team, which was declared overall winner, are available online.

The Environmental Industries Commission has published a major industry-led review into the future of the Government’s flagship environmental policy, the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), following an in-depth, industry-wide research including detailed policy workshops, a cross-industry survey and one-to-one interviews with both CRC participants and carbon management consultants from the public and private sectors. The report argues for a longer term future for a management and allowance system, within the context of the challenges and barriers to energy efficiency which the CRC was originally developed to address.

This is the second in a series of Synthesis Reports (SR) produced by URBAN-NEXUS. These Reports are intended mainly for municipalities, policy-makers and businesses engaged in urban issues, but may also be of interest to organisations, institutions and networks involved in decision-making and developing partnerships to tackle problems encountered in urban sustainable development and management. Each Synthesis Report (SR) of the Urban Nexus project will address a different theme; and this one highlights the importance and urgency of integrating health and quality of life in urban areas. The report contains a comprehensive list of references.

This report opens with a short overview of the critical role for cities in responding to climate change followed by an outline of climate ‘vulnerability’ and ‘resilience’ in an urban context. It identifies areas and knowledge gaps for four key topics: risk and uncertainty; governance; people, and place. For each topic, areas for more detailed consideration in future URBAN-NEXUS activities are suggested.
An Annex of case studies is also available. Examples of case studies and research are presented throughout the report to illustrate relevant sections. Summaries of all of the information received on case studies and partnership initiatives are presented in this annex.
The synthesis report informed discussions at the first URBAN-NEXUS Dialogue cafe held in Glasgow, 29-30 May 2012. A follow-up report from this event is available online here.
