This workshop considered the various types of risks to which agriculture is prone, considered the impact that climate change is expected to have on them, and discussed various risk management strategies, depending on types of risks, and the country and region in question. This two-day workshop consisted of four sessions including setting the scene, types of risks and risk management, case studies and, finally, tools, policies and institutions. Making slums history: A global challenge for 2020. Rabat, 26-28 November 2012

In partnership with UN-Habitat, the government of Morocco hosted this international conference to enable delegates to share their success stories in addressing slum improvement and preventing the formation of new slums through enhanced delivery of adequate housing. A rigorous exchange of experiences ensued and a declaration was adopted by all the 25 states present, where they committed to “Promoting, … the definition of a global goal of halving the proportion of people living in slums between 2015 and 2030, to be part of the overall formulation of the new Sustainable Development Goals and of the Habitat III preparatory process. Meeting the accommodation needs for Traveller communities remains one of the most controversial and divisive issues for local authorities in both rural and urban areas, across the country. The introduction of the NPPF’s Planning Policy for Traveller Sites and the Localism Act, has meant many local authorities are taking stock and evaluating their current housing, planning and equalities practices to ensure obligations on the level and quality of site provision are being met. This event provided the first major opportunity to discuss the key issues and policy implications arising from recent reforms. Presentations are available online.

This first Design and Crime Conference aims to showcase innovative approaches to design for crime prevention. Developing design solutions to complex crime problems requires a collaborative design process that is flexible and dynamic, and which is focused on the desired outcomes, the kinds of environments we would like to achieve, rather than the problems that spoil the environments. This conference aimed to appeal to practitioners and academics from wide-ranging disciplines and professions including: architecture, planning, urban design, housing, community services, criminology, social geography, environmental psychology, product design, urban tourism, visual communications, security personnel; and politicians, developers, and managers of public buildings, retail outlets and transport.
