The main focus of the 48th Congress of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) was on dynamic urban change: growth and decline; environmental and socio-political change; natural and human-made disasters. The Congress also considered the relevance of the theme for the host country, and an open planners’ forum was held for contemporary research, practice and ideas. Governments and society face multiple large and long-term challenges such as the economy and fiscal environment, developing resource pressures and climate change. These challenges are reflected in the cross-cutting government policy priorities including delivering economic growth, wellbeing and sustainable development. The Sustainable Development Research Network Annual Conference brought together high-level speakers and delegates from the policy and research community to explore these issues and the role of evidence in addressing these challenges. The Visitor Economy Forum is the main annual event for public and private sector partners with a stake in the growth of England’s visitor economy. It is the place where important issues impacting on visitor economy growth in England in 2013 and beyond are debated. Polis is a network of European cities and regions working together to develop innovative technologies and policies for local transport. Since 1989, European local and regional authorities have been working together within Polis to promote sustainable mobility through the deployment of innovative transport solutions. The aim is to improve local transport through integrated strategies that address the economic, social and environmental dimensions of transport. Presentations are available online under the following topics: Acoustically green cities; pervasive technologies and tools for managing people movement; road safety and vulnerable road users; financing transport; reducing the impact of transport on air quality; tools to aid decision making on network management and ITS; road safety benchmarking and data collection; the benefits of active travel; towards open systems for traffic management and information services; managing freight movements in different urban contexts; deployment of electric vehicles in city-regions; the role of co-operative mobility in managing transport; tools for the design and operation of urban infrastructures and interchanges; energy efficiency in public transport; ITS to support public transport and soft modes; integrated policies to promote daily cycling; and benchmarking urban mobility.

The Mid-Term Workshop, held in Newcastle on 31 October 2012, was the first public event of the C-LIEGE project after one and half years of project progress. Its main subject focused on presentations and discussions on how to implement successful strategies and push and pull measures in European cities and regions for clean and energy-efficient urban freight transport.

The aim was to showcase the trolleybus as a smart, innovative and sustainable transport mode, as in particular in Germany the trolleybus is often not considered as a future-looking transport mode. The conference highlighted existing systems worldwide and in Germany as well as introduction plans for the cities of Montreal, Canada, and Leeds, UK, and newest developments from the ebus industry. The TROLLEY project presented its results from local pilot studies and investments in the TROLLEY partner cities. Presentations are available online.
