The Invest in Innovative Refurb programme will introduce new, energy efficient, technologies and processes to the refurbishment of non domestic buildings, with the aim of reducing energy use in the existing building stock. The Government is to fund a £10 million, three-year, competition that will show how innovative technologies and processes can be used to make significant energy savings in non domestic buildings such as schools, shops, offices and hotels. The theme of the congress was ‘Conservation on the Edge’. It attracted conservation practitioners and researchers from Europe and around the world to engage in debates and discussion concerning conservation science and practice. One of the aims of the congress was to develop the participation of those involved in marine and coastal conservation, in addition to those concerned with terrestrial conservation. The Urban Design Group’s 30th annual conference considered the value of urban design. Topics covered during the event include: the economic case for the value of urban design; urban design benefits to placemaking; enhancing communities through urban design; open source planning and the role of urban design; promoting the relevance of urban design to clients – developers, house builders and local authorities; new approaches to urban design teaching and learning; UK and international case studies and comparisons; and a focus on Oxford – regeneration and renewal in a sensitive, historic setting. Green Networks are firmly set in Scottish Planning Policy and are starting to be delivered within the Central Scotland Green Network area and in several other local authority areas in Scotland. The vision is to create a connected network of well-designed green spaces and green corridors that transcend the boundaries between urban communities and rural environments. This conference set the policy context for Green Networks in Scotland, and explored the challenges and solutions, current initiatives and examples of best practice. The emphasis of the conference of the CIB Working Group W115 on Construction Materials Stewardship was on innovative design and construction methods and assessment methods that incorporate effective use of materials into the whole life cycle of buildings and building materials. Also new energy concepts and mobility strategies were presented. Proceedings are available online.
Advanced construction and building technology for society. Munich, 24 October 2012
This volume contains from a workshop of the CIB Working Commission W119 on Customised Industrial Construction. This event considered automation and robotics in construction in the belief that industrialization in construction will become more customer oriented. Concepts of mass customization can be implemented via the application of robots in construction and building project/product life cycle as prefabrication processes, on site and in service as socio technical systems.
