The overall aim of this seminar, held by the Outdoor Recreation Network, was to look at the Network’s future role in relation to research by: providing a forum for academics, policy makers and practitioners to debate and discuss a new research agenda for outdoor recreation research; developing a shared understanding of research and evidence needs and priorities for the sector; and identifying tangible ways of achieving better join up between academics, policy makers and practitioners. During the World Urban Forum (WUF 7), the SLoCaT Partnership on Sustainable Transport (SLoCaT) and UN-HABITAT co-organised this event to raise the awareness of WUF 7 partners on the critical role that sustainable, low carbon transport has to play in realising equitable and just cities that are also environmentally sustainable. The objective of the event were to demonstrate the importance of sustainable transport for making cities more socially and economically equitable, and contribute towards the development of a SLoCaT collaborative work program on sustainable transport and poverty alleviation. Fostering urban sustainable development: Potentials and challenges for national and European policy. Brussels, 28 January 2014

The 10th European Sustainable Development Network Workshop facilitated an international exchange on overarching strategic policy initiatives on urban sustainable development at the UN, EU, Member State and sub-national level, covering environmental issues, regional development, economic and social policy fields. Accordingly, the workshop aimed to foster the exchange between experts to intensify co-operations and alliances between EU, national and local policies for urban SD. Workshop documentation is available online, including the final agenda, the discussion paper, participant list, the slides of those keynoters who used PowerPoint, and the workshop report.

Corruption in Construction Seminar. London, 18 March 2014

The aim of the seminar, organized by the Construction Industry Council, was to explore the nature of corruption in the construction industry and how to go about protecting construction businesses against it. The relevance of corruption to the construction industry was illustrated by a recent European Commission report that singled out “Urban Development and Construction”, along with “Healthcare” as specifically vulnerable sectors across the EU. CIOB surveys, carried out in 2006 and 2013, show that approximately half of its members believe that corruption is common within the UK construction industry. Presentations are available online.

The roundtable provided an opportunity for the TCPA to engage its members and practitioners working in and around Greater London and hear their views on revisions to this important strategic planning document, and help inform TCPA’s response and involvement in the process.  The roundtable also introduced and highlighted the link to the Mayor’s Draft Housing Strategy and the funding prospectus which invites bids to increase the supply of much needed new homes in London.
