Building on the experience gained over 2007-2013, the European Network for Rural Development Seminar focused on the contribution of communications to improving rural development policy implementation at the EU, Member State and local level. The event provided representatives of Managing Authorities, Paying Agencies, National Rural Networks, Local Action Groups or other rural stakeholders with the opportunity to share their experience and engage in discussions about the best and most effective ways of communicating rural development. National policy on flood risk management is increasingly focused on the benefit of flood risk management interventions to communities and empowering them to take ownership and work with partners. This presents a challenge to many organisations. The aim of this conference was to explore the details of this approach and by assessing evidence from early lessons from the Flood Resilience Community Pathfinders and other projects. The Building Enclosure Sustainability Symposium (BESS) was initiated in 2009 through a partnership of the Department of Architecture at California State Polytechnic University Pomona and Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. The symposium was designed to bring together professionals from academia, architecture, engineering and construction, as well as students, to discuss state-of-the-art sustainable building enclosure design. The International Conference on Urban Health is considered to be the world’s premier international forum for information-exchange among urban health stakeholders and attracts delegates from across the world and from every kind of social, economical and ethnic background. Abstracts are available online. As part of this event, a group of participants grappled with the ways in which climate change will affect urban health, based on experiences of both the threats and opportunities of managing health risks in countries including India, Tanzania and Vietnam. Speakers at the event outlined current thinking on rainwater management, urban microclimates and air/noise pollution, which they illustrated with best practice case studies focusing on design, construction and maintenance. Later, industry experts gave a live demonstration of the latest sustainable option for street lighting – LEDs controlled by a central management system (or CMS).
