A half-day conference organised by the Hellenic Observatory, LSE and Contemporary Turkish Studies, LSE. Recent citizens’ initiatives in Cyprus have proposed the opening of the ghost town of Varosha and have imagined the revitalisation of the Famagusta area. This conference brought together town planners, architects, and economists to discuss the anticipated social, economic, and ecological consequences of a potential opening. Governments and the UN are drawing up a disaster risk action plan to succeed the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA). A new agreement, HFA2, is due to be signed in March 2015. This event aimed to explore how the private sector can engage in disaster risk reduction within this new agreement. Videos of the proceedings are available online.

The workshop consisted of presentations by both Indian and UK-based academics, funders, policymakers and industry stakeholders, providing an overview of the issues and research around ‘Urbanisation’ in both countries, followed by discussions on potential future collaborations and funding mechanisms. The aim of the event was to bring together UK stakeholders in future cities research and innovation, to create a network with the Indian side.

The focus of this event was to establish the latest thinking and best practice around integrating climate change adaptation and resilience into built environment projects, and to highlight and promote the opportunities for the UK built environment sector. A range of drivers, approaches and tools which support the understanding, communication, and development of the ‘business case’ for climate change adaptation and resilience were highlighted. CIWEM Rivers and Coastal Group Annual Conference considered ways of working and funding arrangements involved in the delivery of major flood and coastal schemes and projects are changing fast. The aim of this conference was for flood and erosion risk professionals be to showcase the developing and innovative partnership approaches to the effective delivery of schemes and projects. This will include the identification of the multiple benefits, working with partners, large consortia projects, framework agreements, shared services agreements, different contractual arrangements and risk management.
