This booklet is an interim report on the international research activities of the CIB  Working Commission W101 Spatial Planning and Infrastructure Development. The basic concept of “The Accessible City” advocated by W101 is described in the overview section of this booklet. As an expert group on spatial design, the commission is convinced that this is a significant step for planning policy now and in the future in order to make urban spaces and society more open and friendly to all the people living in cities, as well as to restore the valuable places that tend to be lost due to motorization, commercialization and even the advancement of information technology. However, the specific aspects of urban issues differ from country to country, as evidenced by the various chapter titles of this booklet. It is both inevitable and enjoyable for international discussions to accept and respect such diversity. This booklet, as the first edition, consists of seven articles from seven countries at present.

This paper explores the effects of social media at a local level, in terms of the interaction between the people and their transforming cities, and between citizens and planning authorities. In attempting to unpack these interactions, this paper analyses how social media, as a tool for collective organisation, sharing and producing information, affects the power relationships around the building of cities. In the final chapter, the example of Puerto Ayora, the Galapagos Islands, the paper analyses some situations where the use of social media has supported social initiatives in achieving their goals. This study suggests that a timely analysis of what is happening, in the digital, as distinct from the physical, spaces where people discuss the city is needed to broaden urban theories and ensure more holistic analysis of what is actually happening.

Impact of airport expansion options on competition and choice

Heathrow Airport commissioned this report from Frontier Economics (Europe) which looked at the impact of different options for airport expansion on competition and choice for passengers. As airport capacity gets congested, passengers are likely to suffer in a number of ways, including rising ticket prices (to keep demand down to the available capacity) and a restricted choice of direct routes. With Heathrow full, passengers are already experiencing these impacts. Moreover, with demand for air travel continually rising and Gatwick also likely to be full before 2030, these costs are set to grow significantly. Frontier’s report is based on empirical analysis of detailed route-level passenger data to model the extent to which a lack of capacity has driven up ticket prices at Heathrow.
