Local Growth Fund (Housing Infrastructure): prospectus

This prospectus sets out the detail on how to access the £50 million part of the Local Growth Fund in 2015 to 2016. The Fund is designed to help speed up and restart housing developments between 250 and 1499 units that have slowed down or stalled. It aims to support housing schemes which are important for local growth and meet local priorities.

With 13 months to go before the next general election, the parties are busily finalising their manifestos. Meanwhile the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that we must mitigate or face the worst consequences of climate change. This article from Melanie Thompson of Get Sust! reflects on the construction industry’s frustrations, vented at Ecobuild in March 2014, and concludes that if we don’t lobby hard now, we won’t get the manifestos we, and the planet, need. The UK private housing sector is driving a construction industry revival, although skills shortages threaten the pace of recovery, according to the latest Construction Market Survey from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. The survey, which covers the first quarter of 2014, explains that the speed at which confidence is returning to the market is revealed by the fastest rate of growth in workloads since the Construction Market survey began in 1994.

Presentations are also available to two seminar held earlier in 2014. The first seminar, “Maximising Crossrail: The experience so far” held on 30 January 2014 , and the second, “Maximising Crossrail: Is collaboration the catalyst?”, held on 25 February 2014.

NBS National BIM Report 2014

This annual document is described as the most comprehensive and trusted report on BIM, its use and adoption, drawing on over 1,000 responses from across the industry. This year’s highlights include: awareness of BIM is now at 95%; over half of respondents now use BIM; and 93% predict adoption by 2016.

Videos are now on YouTube of the first two Landscape Futures debates, held in Sheffield and Birmingham. The Sheffield debate was on the subject ‘Making the World we Want’. A challenging talk by Jonathon Porritt of Forum for the Future opened the series, arguing that the sustainability imperative must be integral to land use planning, and asking whether landscape education was equipping tomorrow’s professionals to work with the global challenges we face. Pam Warhurst responded by focusing on local scale activism, and the power that communities have to shape their landscapes, in this instance through urban food growing in Todmorden. The Birmingham debate asked the question ‘How can we build beautiful places?’
