The Sustainable Design Toolkit aids decision making on sustainable design at the initial concept, pre-planning and planning application stages for development in Hertfordshire. By using open questions and best practice guidance, the Toolkit helps development stakeholders consider and implement the principles and practice of sustainable design in a highly visual, intuitive and engaging way.
Future proofing cities

Atkins’ report Future Proofing Cities was produced in partnership with the UK Department for International Development and University College London in 2012. The report assessed 129 major cities across Africa and Asia and was developed to help tackle risks to long term prosperity and growth. Atkins has updated the Future Proofing Cities webpage where you can find our current projects in India, Colombia, China, Nigeria and the United Kingdom. North America and Middle East content will be coming soon and more from South East Asia.
NBS Specification Survey 2013

In October and November 2013, NBS carried out a research project looking at how the construction industry creates and uses specifications. The research follows previous work carried out in 2011 and 2012. NBS wanted to understand whether specifications have changed, and how people see them developing in the future.

The book highlights field research and studio-based projects on Dharavi, Mumbai conducted with the Bartlett Development Planning Unit students from 2009 to 2012. The collection of essays, photography, and student work illustrates both the theoretical underpinnings and pedagogical ethos of the MSc Building and Urban Design in Development. This publication draws from first-hand experience, research, and critical practices that have sought to investigate a 175 hectares swatch of land in the middle of Mumbai that is home to over 1 million inhabitants. It is a collection of short and long essays, drawings and diagrams, photography, and visualisations on what is known as Dharavi.
Communicating climate science

The Government is failing to clearly and effectively communicate climate science to the public, according to a report by the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee. The MPs found little evidence of co-ordination amongst Government, government agencies and public bodies on communicating climate science, despite various policies at national and regional level to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The Committee concludes that as a matter of urgency, the Government needs to draw up a climate change communication strategy and implement this consistently across all Departments.
Support for housing costs in the reformed welfare system

The House of Commons Work and Pensions Committee has called for people living in significantly adapted homes to be exempt from the bedroom tax, under which benefit is reduced for social tenants deemed to have spare rooms. They also called for everyone on the higher rate mobility or care component of disability living allowance to be exempt. They also said affected households should be exempt if ‘there is no suitable, reasonable alternative’ home to move into.

Following decades of segregation and zoning, the Industrious concept supports with enthusiasm both the ideas of re-integrating a wide range of activities to cities and to re-appropriate business “parks”. There are already growing trends and incentives towards socially responsible practices as well as inclusive work environment and healthier lifestyles. This report aims to identify those trends, raise awareness about their benefits and inform decision makers and business owners about how quality design can support them for the mutual benefit of cities and businesses.

This report provides an overview of shopping centre stock levels and development activity across Europe. The report benchmarks European countries in terms of shopping centre space (sq.m), density (GLA/1,000 inhabitants) and the pipeline for the following 18 months. In addition to a comparison of European prime rental and yield levels, commentary also covers key shopping centres opened, schemes to be delivered, as well as an overview of the European retail investment market activity.
