The first step in their launch is the release of their short guide publication which looks at how the design of buildings and public spaces in cities and towns can lead to positive changes in our lifestyle and ultimately to greater levels of physical activity.

Tracking Adaptation and Measuring Development

Policymakers and practitioners need to better understand the relationships between climate adaptation and development. The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and partners have developed a framework called Tracking Adaptation and Measuring Development (TAMD) to do just this. The TAMD initiative is taking varied approaches in Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nepal, Cambodia and Pakistan to evaluate this relationship at local to national levels. In both Pakistan and Ethiopia, assessments are being made of how well development interventions enable people in remote areas to adapt to a more variable climate.

An estimate of the effects of a reduction in the rate of VAT on housing renovation and repair work: 2015 to 2020

This research report by Experian suggests that a reduction of VAT on housing renovation and repair from 20% to 5% could boost the UK economy by more than £15billion from 2015 to 2020. It could also create more than 95,000 jobs and save 240,000 tonnes of CO2 from thousands of homes. The report is backed by more than 60 charities, trade associations, business groups and financial institutions that are united in calling on all three main political parties to commit to the reduction in their 2015 election manifestos.

The Farrell Review of Architecture and the Built Environment

The Farrell Review, an industry-wide review of architecture and the built environment, led by Sir Terry Farrell and commissioned by Culture Minister Ed Vaizey, has been published. After a wide-reaching consultation process including workshops throughout the country, the findings have been compiled into a report with 60 recommendations. There are four key themes (Education, outreach and skills; Design quality; Cultural heritage; Economic benefits) which were set out in the terms of reference for the Review, with an additional theme of built environment policy which addresses the legacy and proposed way forward.
