Launched in 2008, the overall objective of PSUP is to contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of the urban poor and to contribute to millennium Development goal (MDG) 7, including: target C, to halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation; and, target D, to achieve a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by 2020. Amidst new political focus on the potential of brownfield land, a report from the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) published today shows that local authorities have identified the capacity for at least 1 million new homes on suitable brownfield land in England. The report also makes a series of recommendations that would make brownfield land more attractive to developers and encourage local authorities to do more to identify suitable sites.

Turn down the heat: Confronting the new climate normal

A new report from the World Bank warns of severe impacts on agricultural production, water resources and ecosystems as well as increased vulnerability to coastal flooding as a result of global warming. Key findings of the report include warnings of: heat extremes in Latin America and the Caribbean which could impact soybean and wheat yields; water shortages across north Africa and the Middle east; and the risk of torrential flooding in Central Asia.

Organised by LSE Cities at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Deutsche Bank’s Alfred Herrhausen Society, the 2014 Urban Age conference investigated the link between urban governance and our capacities to engage with and shape the future development of cities. The conference, hosted in partnership with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) acted as a platform for exchange and debate amongst over 350 policy-makers, academics, business leaders, urban designers, architects, and representatives of NGOs and local community groups.
