English Heritage has published its 12th annual survey of the England’s historic environment. The 2013 report focuses on skills shortages and publishes new research which reveals that over 40% of cultural heritage organisations feel their workforce currently lack skills and 60% do not have a training budget. In addition to information on skills, Heritage Counts summarises key policy changes and performance indicators for the sector.

A Bill to regulate the construction of new basements and the extension of existing ones, received its first reading in the Commons on the 12 November 2013. The Bill was introduced by Karen Buck, MP for Westminster North, as a Private Members Bill. The Bill is expected to have its second reading debate on the 28 February 2014.

Predicted human population growth over the next 50 years will have immense consequencesfor all cities, in particular intermediate cities with populations of up to two million people. Developed countries will need to double the amount of urban space they have by 2050 to accommodate the expected numbers of people, whereas developing countries will need to expand their urban space by more than 300 per cent.

EU ministers and MEPs have signed into law the seventh environment action programme, setting out the bloc’s long-term policy direction for the environment and climate. The programme aims to push the EU in the direction of so-called ‘green growth’, economic development that places as little burden on the environment as possible. It sets out nine policy objectives for 2020, including protecting nature and strengthening ecological resilience, boosting resource-efficient, low-carbon economic growth and addressing environment-related threats to health.

The UK’s tourism industry is set to grow at a faster pace than crucial sectors such as retail, construction and manufacturing, according to a report commissioned by Visit Britain. The Deloitte study reports that the tourism sector will grow by 3.8 per cent a year from now until 2025. It adds that tourism is responsible for one in three new UK jobs created from 2010 to 2012.
