Promoting Britain as a world class destination for events of all types, Britain for Events focuses on every aspect of “events” from live music and sport, festivals and cultural events to meetings and conferences, incentive travel, product launches, exhibitions and trade shows. Britain for Events is managed by the Business Visits and Events Partnership (BVEP) and will be acting as secretariat for the first ever All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) Inquiry into the competitiveness of the UK events industry.

Greater flexibilities for change of use

GB electricity capacity margin

The capacity margin of the GB electricity system could continue to fall over the next five years as old generating plants close, presenting an increasing risk of power cuts, according to a report published by the Royal Academy of Engineering. The study was undertaken at the request of the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology (CST) to explore whether the capacity margin of the GB electricity system could reach unacceptably low levels within this decade.

Definition of zero carbon for non domestic buildings

The UK Green Building Council is launching a new Task Group to help define and build support for an ambitious definition of zero carbon for non domestic buildings that works for industry.  The Task Group, which is sponsored by British Land and Saint-Gobain, will launch its final report in February 2014. Draft Strategy for Sustainable Housing and Land Management in the ECE region for the period 2014 – 2020

Meeting in Geneva, on Tuesday, 8 October 2013, ministers and heads of agencies for housing, urban development and land administration from 55 countries adopted a regional Strategy for Sustainable Housing and Land Management for 2014 to 2020. Through its 15 objectives and 36 targets, the Strategy addresses the environmental, social and economic dimensions of sustainability in housing and land management. It will serve as a guide tor governments and for the work of the UNECE Committee on Housing and Land Management for the seven years to come. The Strategy recognizes the key role that housing plays in the well-being of the region’s citizens, as well as its important role in climate change mitigation.

Voluntary code for a self-financed Housing Revenue Account

The introduction of Housing Revenue Account (HRA) self-financing has given local authorities the freedom to develop and deliver a more positive, less constrained, vision for council housing. The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and the Chartered Institute of Housing believe that it is vital that local authorities have effective governance and financial management frameworks in place in order for self-financing to be a success. In order to support local authorities in assessing and developing these frameworks the two institutes have worked together to produce a voluntary code of practice for the sector.

Urban profiling of refugee situations in Delhi

The study explored the differences in livelihood security between refugees from Myanmar, Afghanistan and Somalia and their local Indian neighbours, in order to identify impeding and contributing factors to better livelihoods. The ultimate goal is to improve self-reliance of urban refugees in Delhi through more evidence based programming and advocacy.  The profiling in Delhi and the resulting report are part of a bigger effort to improve approaches to urban profiling and develop better methodologies to address data collection in the urban context. A report on urban profiling in Quito, Ecuador, is expected to be finalised in December 2013.

It maps where poor people are likely to live by 2030 and it develops a range of scenarios aimed at identifying potential patterns of vulnerability to extreme weather and earthquakes. Climate Asia is the largest ever study of people’s experience of climate change in seven countries, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and Vietnam. In 2012, Climate Asia surveyed more than 33,500 people in Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and Vietnam. Using both quantitative and qualitative research, Climate Asia has built a picture of how people in the region live and deal with climate change. The Data Portal can be used to access this survey data by country and by region, read detailed reports of the findings, use the research tools, and discover how the data was analysed. This unique data provides information for governments, donors, the media, NGOs and everyone who wants to support people to adapt to the changing environment.
